Frequently asked questions

What is POS hardware?

POS hardware is the device or devices used for processing in-person transactions, like taking payments or handling refunds. It includes POS terminals, card readers, cash drawers, barcode scanners, receipt printers, and more.

What point of sale hardware do I need for a retail store?

That depends on your business type and where you’re selling. Some brick-and-mortar locations use a full countertop setup that includes a POS tablet, card reader, receipt printer, scanner, and cash drawer. Others use mobile POS devices to sell on the floor.

But if you’re selling at popups or events, all you need is a device (like a smartphone or mobile POS), software (like Shopify POS app), and a product to sell.

What’s the difference between POS hardware and POS software?

POS software, like the Shopify POS app, is the application that processes transactions, tracks inventory, manages customers, and generates reports. POS hardware refers to the physical devices that run the software, such as card readers, receipt printers, barcode scanners, and cash drawers. Together, they power your in-person sales.

How much does POS hardware cost?

Depending on your needs, hardware costs will vary. For mobile selling, a smartphone and Tap to Pay might be all you need. A retail store with a full countertop might need a tablet, card reader, receipt printer, barcode scanner, and cash drawer.

Consider your selling environment and budget. You can always add POS equipment as your business grows.

Can I use existing hardware with Shopify POS?

Yes. In most cases, your own tablet, smartphone, and existing hardware will work with Shopify POS. To check compatibility, visit the Shopify Help Center.

For the best experience, we recommend using Shopify hardware and software together. Shopify’s first-party payment hardware offers a fully integrated experience that lets you take payments, and enjoy quick payouts with consistent rates from Shopify Payments.

What POS equipment do I need for mobile checkout?

Mobile checkouts need just a few things: a supported smartphone or tablet, software like the Shopify POS app, and a card reader for tap, swipe, and chip payments.

Are Shopify POS and Shopify POS hardware available in my country?

You can use Shopify POS in nearly every country. However, to enjoy its full benefits, we recommend using Shopify Payments and Shopify POS hardware, both of which are available only in select regions. Find supported countries and regions on the Shopify Help Center.
