Commerce moves fast. Shopify moves faster.

Try Shopify

Moving from the Shopify Advanced plan to the Shopify Plus plan is a business decision about whether the added control and potential operating savings justify a larger monthly bill.

At current USD prices, the Shopify Advanced plan starts at $299 per month when billed yearly. The Shopify Plus plan starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term. The difference can be offset by lower payment fees, fewer workarounds, and stronger checkout tools. The decision depends not only on revenue, but also on whether the current plan is creating operational limits that cost the business time or money.

This guide looks at revenue and eligibility, signs that the Shopify Advanced plan no longer fits, the value of the Shopify Plus plan for high-volume stores, how to upgrade, and what changes once the new plan is active.

Is there a revenue threshold for Shopify Plus?

There is no universal revenue threshold for the Shopify Plus plan. It’s for high-volume and complex businesses, but there’s no minimum GMV or annual revenue figure.

For a standard setup, the Shopify Plus plan costs $2,500 per month on a one-year term or $2,300 per month on a three-year term. Some larger or more complex businesses pay a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model. The fee structure differs for business-to-business (B2B) and direct-to-consumer (DTC) sales.

We do publish estimated sales break-even points for moving to the Shopify Advanced plan:

Region Using Shopify Payments Not using Shopify Payments
US and Australia $1.32 million $528,000
Canada, UK, and Ireland $880,000 $528,000
Singapore and New Zealand $2.64 million $528,000

These estimates show when lower payment fees can cover the higher price of Advanced. They aren’t Shopify Plus qualification thresholds.

For Plus, the sales team reviews the business’s sales volume, payment setup, and operating needs before providing exact pricing.

Minimum revenue for Shopify Plus to be worth it

There is no monthly revenue figure that automatically makes Plus a good investment. Whether it’s worth the upgrade depends on how much a business saves or earns compared with staying on Advanced.

Build the calculation from five areas:

  • Plan price: Compare Advanced at $299 per month billed yearly or $399 month to month with Plus at $2,300 or $2,500 per month, depending on the term.
  • Payment fees: For US businesses, standard online card rates start at 2.5% plus 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% plus 30¢ on Plus. Third-party transaction fees drop from 0.6% to 0.2%. These rates vary by country, so the final calculation needs the rates in the Plus quote.
  • Checkout gains: Shopify checkout converts 15% better on average than other commerce platforms, but that is a platform-wide figure, not the expected lift from upgrading. Base the forecast on the specific checkout changes the business plans to make on Plus.
  • Peak-sale risk: Checkout on the Plus plan is load-tested for more than 10,000 checkouts per minute. Put a value on sales lost during past outages or failed launches, but do not treat that capacity figure as a revenue requirement.
  • Workarounds: Add up the apps, developer time, and manual work used to get around Advanced limits. Then count only the costs the upgrade will actually remove.

An independent consulting study commissioned by Shopify found that Shopify’s total cost of ownership (TCO) was, on average, 33% lower than that of competing platforms. That figure compares Shopify with competing commerce platforms, but it doesn’t estimate the savings from moving from Advanced to Plus.

The real break-even point comes from the business’s transaction volume, payment mix, operating costs, and expected profit from features available after upgrading. The Shopify Plus sales team can supply the current rates needed to finish that calculation.

Shopify Plus requirements and eligibility

A business is ready for the Shopify Plus plan when Advanced limits are costing money, slowing the team down, or blocking a needed feature. These are the main areas to examine.

Volume and infrastructure needs

High traffic alone doesn’t mean the business needs to upgrade to Plus. The stronger signal is concentrated traffic from a flash sale, product launch, or campaign that puts checkout performance at risk.

During the biggest flash sales and events of the year, Shopify averages 99.99% uptime worldwide.

Team and account scale

Advanced allows 15 staff accounts, compared with unlimited accounts on the Plus plan. Once more employees need direct access, teams have to limit who can work in the Shopify admin. That can become an upgrade signal as more teams or roles need access.

The Shopify Plus plan also includes custom user groups. An administrator can set permissions once and apply them to everyone in the same department or role.

B2B and wholesale requirements

The Shopify Advanced plan already provides core B2B tools, including company profiles, net terms, quantity rules, and self-service ordering. Its main limit is three active catalogs across all B2B markets.

Plus removes that catalog limit and adds:

  • Direct catalog assignment to a company or company location
  • Customer-level pricing through direct company catalogs
  • Deposit requirements
  • Partial payments
  • Payment requests for each fulfillment

These features are important when a business manages many customer-specific price lists or collects payment in stages. A business that only needs Shopify’s core B2B tools can stay on Advanced.

Checkout and storefront customization

Advanced can tailor storefront and checkout experiences by market, but its overall checkout customization is limited. Plus opens the Checkout Branding API and Shopify Extensions for businesses that need more control over the checkout experience.

Plus can also run different checkout flows for B2B and DTC customers in the same store. For example, a business can offer wholesale buyers different payment terms or shipping options from those available to retail customers.

International and multi-location retail

Plus offers up to nine expansion stores, which can support businesses operating across multiple markets or locations. Each live expansion store needs its own theme license.

For multi-location retail, Plus supports up to 200 active point-of-sale (POS) locations, with POS Pro fees waived when Shopify Payments is active and each location processes at least one retail transaction per month.

Businesses with more complex headless requirements can also run up to 25 React-based storefronts built with Hydrogen and Oxygen on Plus, compared with one custom storefront on Advanced.

Signs you've outgrown Advanced

The clearest warning signs are recurring jobs that Advanced makes harder or more expensive:

  • You have filled all 15 staff accounts. More employees or teams need direct admin access.
  • Three B2B catalogs are no longer enough. You need to manage more customer-specific catalogs or assignments.
  • The checkout changes you need stop at the plan limit. Your business needs more control over the checkout experience.
  • Major launches put checkout performance at risk. Plus provides high-volume checkout capacity and bot protection for flash sales and product drops.
  • New markets need their own stores. Your business needs separate storefronts for additional markets or locations.
  • Your retail operation is nearing 10 active locations. You need to continue expanding your physical retail footprint.
  • Campaigns and integrations require too many manual fixes. Launchpad, Shopify Functions, custom apps, and higher API limits on Plus can reduce operational work.
  • You need more support options for critical issues. Plus provides priority 24/7 support with phone and chat access.

See how Shopify Advanced and Plus compare.

Compare plan features

Is Shopify Plus worth it for high-volume stores?

For a high-volume DTC or omnichannel business, Plus is worth it when lower fees, added gross profit, and operating savings exceed the extra platform cost.

For a US business, the direct cost comparison looks like this:

Cost Advanced Plus
Subscription $399/month, or $299/month billed yearly $2,500/month on a one-year term or $2,300/month on a three-year term
Standard online card rate 2.5% + 30¢ USD From 2.25% + 30¢ USD
Third-party payment-provider fee 0.6% 0.2%

Performance can change the calculation too. DTC and wholesale brand Al.ive body saw a 47% increase in conversion after customizing checkout and generated more than AU$1 million during four Black Friday days.

Checkout on Plus is load-tested to handle more than 10,000 checkouts per minute, with unlimited bandwidth and transactions. It also has an average uptime of 99.99% across Shopify worldwide during the year’s largest sales events. This is separate from Shopify’s rolling 99.9% platform figure and is not presented here as a single-store service-level agreement.

After upgrading to Plus, omnichannel retailer Knya saw a 105% increase in online revenue, 97% more transactions, and a 79% reduction in dispatch time.

How to upgrade to Shopify Plus: Step by step

  1. Identify what Advanced is costing the business. Record the limits causing extra work, lost sales, or delayed projects. Use the plan comparison to separate Plus features from tools already available on Advanced.
  2. Get a Plus quote. Send the Shopify Plus sales team the store’s annual online revenue, payment setup, sales model, and technical needs. The quote will establish the plan fee and payment rates.
  3. Review the agreement. Confirm the billing currency, one- or three-year term, transaction fees, and any service levels. Plus prices and available currencies differ by market.
  4. Map the work. List the themes, apps, integrations, checkout changes, B2B setup, expansion stores, and data involved. The Plus launch checklist provides a full implementation framework and contact points for Plus Support.
  5. Audit every app and integration. Shopify does not publish a single compatibility list. Install apps early, test their full function, and document any theme code they add. The Plus Certified App Program is a collection of enterprise recommendations, not a list of every app that works on Plus.
  6. Set a low-risk go-live date. Finish testing planned changes before the go-live date.

Plus includes unlimited staging stores, so the team can test the new theme, checkout, apps, and integrations before making changes to the production store.

What changes on day one after upgrading

The upgrade unlocks access to Plus features, but it doesn’t configure them. Here’s what an organization will need to do next after upgrading.

Area Access added with Plus Setup still needed
Expansion stores Up to nine expansion stores for international markets or separate locations. Create each store, configure its data and settings, and license its live theme.
Checkout Checkout Branding API, Shopify Extensions, and separate B2B and DTC checkout experiences in one store. Build or install the extensions and test each customer path.
Campaigns Access to Launchpad for scheduled sales, launches, restocks, theme changes, and other event tasks. Install Launchpad and configure each event.
Users Unlimited staff accounts and custom user groups. Invite users, build groups, and assign permissions.
B2B Unlimited B2B market catalogs and direct catalog assignment to companies and company locations. Build the catalogs and assign them to the correct buyers.
Retail The first 20 POS Pro locations are included. POS Pro fees are waived for up to 200 locations when the business meets Shopify’s documented Shopify Payments condition.
Support Priority 24/7 phone and chat support. Use the Plus contact options shown in the Shopify admin.
Apps and partners Access to Shopify’s Plus Certified App ecosystem and curated Plus service partners. Select and contract with the app provider or service partner.
Testing Unlimited staging stores, 1 TB of file storage per store, and up to 100 themes. Create the staging stores and activate each available test drive on selected stores.
Email suppression Shopify Plus Support can deactivate selected customer notification emails. Contact Plus Support with the notifications that need to be suppressed.
APIs Plus-only REST resources include GiftCard, Multipass, and User. Plus-only GraphQL resources include publishablePublish and publishableUnpublish. Update and test the integrations that use the added capacity or resources.

The store switcher is a separate admin feature, not a Plus-only tool. It lets users move between stores and organizations connected to the same email address. Expansion stores appear there once the user has access, but the switcher does not create or manage them.

How much does Shopify Plus cost per month?

Shopify Plus costs $2,500 USD per month on a one-year term or $2,300 USD per month on a three-year term. Prices differ by billing currency. Some complex, higher-volume businesses pay a variable platform fee.

Does Shopify Plus include B2B features?

Shopify Plus includes B2B features and adds unlimited market catalogs, direct catalog assignment, deposits, partial payments, and payment requests per fulfillment. Advanced is limited to three active B2B market catalogs and excludes those payment features.
